Text Box: The circuit board is one of the most common components to fail. When diagnosing a furnace problem, the technician will test the circuit board with a voltage tester and equipment designed specifically for testing these boards. Often, a problem with a circuit board can be found with a visual inspection. The technician will see black smoky areas on the board where components burned out.

Text Box: It takes approximately 4 to 8 years to learn how to install and repair furnaces. The information provided, on this page, is intended to give you an insight to what may be wrong with your furnace and the technical knowledge that is required to repair your furnace.

ONLY PROFESSIONAL HEATING CONTRACTORS SHOULD REPAIR AND INSTALL FURNACES

It is not about the money. It is about safety. There are literally thousands of pieces of information regarding the safety issues with furnaces and no handyman or     do-it-yourselfer could possibly install a furnace with all the safety requirements.

Text Box: When you turn on a modern forced air furnace, the furnace operates in a sequence as follows:
1. The inducer blower turns on for approximately one minute to remove any dangerous or unburned gases up the vent pipe and into the atmosphere. When most people hear the inducer motor turn on they confuse the noise with the blower that moves air through the air ducts.

2. After the inducer motor runs, the hot surface ignitor will glow a bright orange color or the intermittent sparker will start sparking and make a clicking sound.

3. A small pilot flame will light. Some furnaces with hot glow ignitors do not have a pilot flame and skip this phase.
4. The furnace burner (gas jets) will come on.
5. The air duct blower will come on and heat will flow through the heat registers.

SIMPLIFIED DIAGNOSTICSPROBLEM
Turn on wall thermostat and furnace fails to operatesCheck wall thermostat. Go to Furnace Parts. Check 110 volt power supply to furnace.
Inducer motor turns on and shuts offCircuit board did not sense the flame sensor or intermittent sparker. The ignitor is defective, the circuit board is defective, or another sensor in the furnace is defective.
Inducer motor comes on, the hot surface ignitor glows, but the burners will not come on.The most common reason the burners will not come on is something on the circuit board is burned out. The problem could also be the main gas valve to the furnace is shut off, or the gas solenoid valve is defective.
